• Notes

  Ens John TUTTLE held several public offices, and was ensign of the Dover military company. He lived on the west side of Back river, about a mile from his father, on his grandfather's farm. He owned a large tract of land in the parish of Somersworth and another at Tole End. On May 7, 1712, when he was attending to some business at his mill on the upper falls of Cochecho, with his eldest son, he was suddenly attacked by some Indians and slain. His son Thomas escaped. At the time of the massacre at Dover, in 1689, his wife's father, her brother and her sister, were killed and the garrison burned by the Indians, while she and two sisters were carried away. The party was overtaken after a time by the soldiers at Conway and the three prisoners rescued. When John Tuttle was killed he left his wife with six children, the oldest only fourteen years of age.
